The Wildfish fly selection packs from JM Gillies are real eye catchers and sure fire winners for those new to fly fishing and even for some who might be not so new to the sport. There are nine packs (10 Felty’s flies in each) in the range and these are divided into two groups, the Freshwater Trout packs and various Eastuary/Saltwater packs. The reality is that there’s plenty of overlap. For example the Trout Streamer Pack would very easily be at home in the kit of a bass fisherman or in fact a fly fisherman just about anywhere around the country. Conversely the Bass Pack contains flies that are just as at home in many tropical freshwater systems right across the north and in the Billabong Pack are flies that would light up the eyes of a bass fisherman. Cast the poppers in close to the cover and amongst the lily pads, bloop them slowly and delay your strike, let the fish turn. Use the Clousers down deep, especially amongst the snags, expect them to be picked up by a fish as they sink. Fish them along the edges of weed beds as well. Barramundi love a Clouser as do Saratoga, Tarpon, and Sooty Grunters. The Pink Thing and Black’n Barred are classic Barramundi flies, fish them slow with a jerky retrieve. Many things eat a Woolly Bugger but particularly Tarpon.
